Welcome to our blog, we hope that this blog will give you a glimpse into our work while providing useful information.

New Year, Great Surprises! A “Thank You” to all our brides from 2009

As I was getting ready to say goodbye to 2009 and welcome to 2010, I received a phone call and an email that completely blew me away.   As it turns out, our brides from 2009 thought we went above and beyond our call of duty and we were awarded the “Best of Weddings 2010″ by the Knot.   The know started this in 2007 and we were one of the first florist to receive such prestigious award.   Now, getting it for a second time is truly an honor and we have no one else to thank but our brides.  Our mission is always to make your day a special one and with this, you all have made our year special.  A very special thank you comes to you from all of us at My Wedding Blooms for making us #1.

Congratulations

I have no words to express the excitement this brings to all of us at My Wedding Blooms.  I cannot think of a better way to start the new year2010.   Being recognized for what you did the year before is just great, it makes every extra effort we made worthwhile.

Vendor Spotlight: Jordana Taylor – “Hazelnut Photography”

As a florist, I have encountered a lot of talented photographers, sometimes from the very early stages in their careers.   Photographers like that have become some of the best out there, such as our dear friends Cat and Adi from Next Exit Photography.   It just take a few moments looking at their work and you can tell that they are very talented and they deserve to be where they are today.    There are some other well established photographers out there that have engraved their name in the wedding industry by producing outstanding images, over and over again.   Photographers such as Duke from Duke Images, Christine Marie, Ben Chrisman and many more.

From time to time, I run into individuals that are trying to get into wedding photography, either because they like it or because they are drawn into it because of the money.   Most of these “NEW FACES”, I never get to see again or hear from, they come and go like shooting stars.    A few  months ago, I ran into a new face, someone that I had never seen in or worked with, that was Jordana Taylor from Hazelnut Photography.    I have to be honest, when I first saw her I thought that she was the assistant to the main photographer, she was walking around shooting here and there as if she was testing her camera.   Little did I know that it was Jordana scouting the location to capture the details, definitely one of her strengths.   As the day progressed, I kept on watching her take the shots of the details that some photographers miss.   By the end of the day, I asked for one her cards and I told her that I would send her an email to request some images.    I did, I sent it the very following day and a few days later, I received a disc on the mail, it was from Jordana with a sweet note telling me that she had a lot of fun shooting my flowers.   I popped the disk on my computer and when I started to view the images, I was blown away by the attention to detail and the ability to capture the elements that I wanted to emphasize while making the flowers.   When I got to see the bridal bouquet, it was just like I had imagined it in my head before I got into making it, it was sweet to see it captured on her photos as it was in my mind.  It was like if she took a picture of the image in my head, I have no more words to describe it.   I instantly became a fan of her images, i went to her website and indulged on her work.   Little did I know that we were meant to work together again couple of months later, at a small wedding in a very unique place, the Figueroa Hotel.    The wedding took place and when i got the pictures from our second common customer, I couldn’t believe my eyes, her consistency showed right away, it was no lucky shot on the first wedding, she had done it again.

Here are the two photographs side by side, it’s just incredible how she capture every little detail on each bouquet in a single shot, just awesome!

As I stated before, her images are so fabulous that both of these weddings got picked up but a well know blogger, Leila Khalil from Inspired By This and the other one by LA Style Unveiled.

Last week I ran into Jordana at a Wedding Industry party and I got a chance to thank her personaly for making my work worthwhile.     At the same time, I was curious to know about her photography background and I asked her: “So, How did you get into photography?”  at that time she told me that it was kind of a long story but since I wanted to hear it, I asked her to email me with her story, that I was really interested to know; this is what she emailed me a couple of days later:

I never, in a million years, would have thought I’d be a professional photographer, Never… Ever.  I’ve always loved photography, it was my hobby and it made me happy.  But to live my life, doing something I absolutely loved AND be able to pay my mortgage.  I never in a million years.

It was after my own wedding that I began to consider photography.   After putting my heart and soul into our wedding I hit the Post Wedding Slump.  I’d put every inch of my creative self into the wedding and, now that it was over, I was left with a pile of Thank You notes to write and no outlet for my creativity!  I began shooting more to fill the gap.  Shooting my food and shooting my cats and shooting flowers.  I was reading everything I could find on photography.  I was feeling creative again!  Suddenly I was shooting my closest friends and then their friends and then people were calling me to shoot them.

Right before my eyes a business began to emerge!

Even though I never could have imagined myself here, I now can’t imagine being anywhere else.  Photography was the absolute perfect career choice for me and I’m so happy that it found me. I am incredibly lucky to live my life, doing what I love, with clients I adore!

My dear Jordana, thank you for sharing your story with me, I totally know what you mean when you say that your career found you, I am also the result of being found by my career.   I wish you the best and I hope to work with you again soon.

My Wedding Blooms will be a speaker at “Backstage Bridal”

Great news everybody, finally there is an event that is designed with the bride in mind.   This event is called Backstage Bridal and it will take place on February 28, 2010 at the Pacific Electric Lofts Penthouse Ballroom in downtown Los Angeles.   Now, let me say that what makes this event so special is that this is NOT a “Bridal Show”.   Backstage Bridal is a unique wedding experience where couples and vendors come together in a more relaxed way.   Wedding professionals will be sharing knowledge with the couples that attend as well as answering questions.   Panel discussions through out the whole day will include:  ”Planning a wedding” by Tami Brown; ”How to get the most out of your flowers” by Lori and myself;  ”How to enhance your event with lighting” by Jason Fox and many others.   There are several speakers lined up for this event, from invitations and menu cards to financial planning and dancing tips for the first dance.

These are some of the professionals that are going to be a part of this amazing experience:

In Style Weddings featured one of our Bridal bouquets

As I am doing some research, I came across the website for In Style Weddings; I knew who they were but had never visited their website.   Then I remember that a couple of months ago, they had contacted me and asked if they could have some of my work as they were working on the Autumn selection.  I sent them a few images and totally forgot about it.  Well, you can imagine how surprised I was when I came across one of our Bridal bouquets on their website, they called it “Bold and Beautiful”.

This Bouquet was made for one of my brides that loved yellow, I truly believe that she got her favorite color trough out her wedding.  as described on InStyleWedddings.com, it has yellow cymbidium orchids, yellow mini callas and yellow mokara orchids.

We have been Featured on LA Style Unveiled!

Last Month, we did the flowers for Danielle and Ben’s wedding at the Figueroa Hotel in Downtown L.A.   When Danielle came to see us, she had a clear idea of what she wanted; she just needed a little help putting it together.  Her four bridesmaids, each wore a different color dress; orange, purple, yellow and fuchsia.   For the girls, she wanted bouquets in white and ivory flowers with a touch of blush pink.    For her flowers, she wanted to carry a bouquet that displayed each and every color of the girls dresses.    As a concept, it sounds easy; the challenge was to find the right flowers in the right shades with the right textures to make it stand out without overpowering her dress.    After an hour or so, we narrowed down the options and she gave me the go ahead.

The day of the wedding, we put together for her a Bouquet that had the most amazing orange Dahlias, fuchsia Gloriosa Lilies, purple Lisanthius and Yellow Freesia as the main flowers.    Working like a backdrop, Hocus Pocus roses took second stage while Kiwi branches gave it a mystic touch.   The result was incredible, the time we spent picking flower in the right colors and textures paid off, we were able to give Danielle everything she asked from us.   On this wedding, we got a chance to work with one of our favorite photographers, Jordana from Hazelnut Photography.   For those who are not familiar with Jordana’s work, she is a very talented photographer that has a natural eye for detail.   What comes natural for her, many photographers work hard to acquire.    We have worked with her before and it’s no accident that she was able to capture the essence of the flowers on her images.    The other wedding that we worked with Jordana was also a great one, I will be blogging it soon, I promise!

This afternoon, as I came back to my office from a site visit, I opened my email and there it was, an email from LA Style Unveiled to let me know that we had been featured on their website.   I was very happy to see that it was Danielle’s wedding they had chosen.   I absolutely loved working with Danielle; she was a fun person from day one.   Congratulations Danielle, you and Ben deserve the best and I wish you both the best.    I will be posting some pictures soon but for now, here’s the link to the featured piece of Danielle and Ben’s wedding on LA Style Unveiled.

Sneak Peak: Zoila and Eric tie the knot

I first met Zoila and Eric last year as they were recommended to my by their wedding coordinator Katie Lee from Bella Destinee.   Their wedding took place at the beautiful Westlake Village Inn, in Westlake Village, CA, it was a cozy and intimate wedding for just close family and good friends.  She didn’t have any Bridesmaids or Groomsman, only a flower girl and a female Ring bearer.  The ceremony was at the Tuscan Garden and the Reception at the Fairway room.   Selecting the color was a challenge for Zoila and me, at the beginning it was Ivory, peach and yellow but towards the end, it shifted to Coral and ended in Orange with a touch of Silver.    Not having any bridesmaids gave Zoila the liberty of changing her colors at will, that also was a factor in the final look.  For the ceremony, we draped the gazebo in the front part with white Satin, adding a burnt orange Chiffon in the back of it to give it some dimension.  Round flower clusters in Orange roses and Mocara Orchids were placed on each one of the areas where the material was pinched and two brown pedestals with glass cylinders on either side of the archway.   The cylinders were made entirely with orange Roses, orange Mocara Orchids and Orange Alstromerias; Silver Curly Willows were added to bring it the touch of silver that we needed.   The chairs displayed small clusters of orange Mocara Orchids tied with burnt orange ribbon.   Her bouquet was a combination of white Mini Callas, ivory Roses and white Cymbidium Orchids.  This type of bouquet is not only very versatile but also very light weight, the number one request from most of my brides.

For the reception, she wanted to have something clean but at the same time with a strong presence.  To achieve that, we painted Manzanita Branches in Silver, then we added the same orange Mocara Orchids used in the ceremony.   The branches were placed in square glass vases filled with water and three smaller square vases filled with orchids surrounded the main piece.  For a finishing touch, square votive candles were added to the table to maintain the shape of all the vases used.   The cake was the only thing that Zoila decided to leave with the original idea as far as colors, it was Peach, Ivory, Orange and a touch of yellow.   We are very excited since we will be getting some shots from the photographer, Natalie and Michael Garay from NMG Photography, until I do, my shots are going to have to do.  Michael and Natalie, it was very nice working with you both.   Let’s move on to some pictures now…

Despite the fact that it was really hot that day, we had fun putting this together.  The colors looked great, specially at the Tuscan garden, against the brown of the gazebo.  Zoila and Eric were a pleasure to work with, being able to help them with the details was also fun.  Congratulations and I wish you both the best.

Keeping the green rolling…

As I have stated in previous post, this year I have seen a surge of brides using green flowers.   We have done just about all the colors possible, but green is in demand, that’s for sure.    Some weddings use green as an accent, that has been going on for a while now; but using 95% of the flowers in green, that is the novelty.

Last month Gloria and Matt tied the knot at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes.  The location is just amazing, the grounds are gorgeous and the ceremony took place at the “Catalina Point”, probably one of the most unique ceremony sites out there.   The resort just opened this year and we had the privilege to be the 3rd florist to do a wedding there.   Staff at the resort were very accommodating and helpful, that’s always a plus when we are setting up.

Gloria chose a nice tangerine color for her bridesmaid’s dresses and she wanted to compliment them with green flowers.  For her, we created a mixed hand tied bouquet in Mango Mini Callas, light orange Cymbidium Orchids and orange Mocara Orchids.   The bridesmaids carried mixed bouquets in all green flowers with some orange accents and the centerpieces were simple submerged green and orange Orchids with floating candles.   The photos are a courtesy of Studio Q photography.  They took some amazing shots of the wedding and the location, thank you Jay, looking forward to working with you again.  The Coordinator to the wedding was Esther Kim from My Bride Story.   What can I say about Esther that I have not said before, fantastic job, everything went as planned with the exception to the delivery of the cake which was 2 hours late.   The cake being late was not Esther’s fault, that’s for sure; the driver got lost and didn’t realize it until it was too late.   No big deal, we waited for the cake to arrive, we decorated it outside the room and then the cake was moved inside, with flowers and all.

We received so may great pictures from the photographer, it was really hard to pick just one to post here.

Overall, it was a great experience, the grounds are so big that there’s no need to go to the gym after all the walking you have to do here.   Another thing that is worth mentioning is that it can get really windy at the ceremony site, there is nothing to block the ocean breeze.  Then again, it could be a nice thing during the hot summer months.

Colorful summer wedding

Last month we got the chance to do a wedding at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, this wedding was unique in many different ways. Our bride, Kelly, loved color, Gerbera Daisies and Butterflies. We were presented with the challenge to maximize on all of those elements, always keeping in mind that it was a formal wedding. We were asked to bring in a Chuppah for the Jewish ceremony and use red, orange, yellow and hot pink Gerberas all over.  The bride had a multi color Bouquet and the Bridesmaids carried a Bouquet with a single color each.  The Photographer was Oscar Zagal from Zagal Photography and the colors on the bouquets was captured perfectly by him.   Kelly had her ceremony in the grass area and the cocktails in the cemented courtyard, this is the best setting for a ceremony at the river center as long as the guest count doesn’t exceed 180 guest or so.

The pictures from the ceremony were taken by me but the pictures of the bouquets are the pictures taken by her photographer, thank you for the images.

This was a fun and interesting wedding to do, the colors definitely brighten up the location and added the color to all the green that’s already there.

A little memorie…

Last December, we were contacted by a TV show producer, they asked us if we could do some flowers for a surprise wedding they were planning to put in the air.   After reviewing the details, we decided to go for it.   We got in touch with the bride, her name was Lilly and her favorite color was Lavender.   We made for her a lavender Mini Calla Lilly bouquet and created a ceremony site in mostly lavenders roses with white Hydrangeas, Casa Blanca Lillies, Phalenopsis Orchids, a touch of purple and silver accents.   The show was called “Osbourne’s Reloaded” and it aired back in January on Fox, right after American Idol.   We were there at the taping of the show, it was a lot of fun, a bit crazy at the end but really fun.  Today, while looking for something else on You Tube, I found the clip from that show, check it out.

Osbournes Reloaded Clip (Click Here)

The set was pretty large, which makes the arch (hoop) that we decorated look not that big but it was 12 feet in diameter.    The whole ceremony area was decorated by us, the aisle decor where she walks through and the chair decor in front of the arch.  They have rules for the sets, one of them was that we had to have everything ready for them and they were going to place it on the set for us (some kind of union rule or something like that).    Well, this was the first time that we got to sit down and watch someone else place our flower decorations.   It was fun, a lot of fun.

A little more green, this time with purple.

As I was going through my files, I realized that I had couple more recent weddings that used green flowers as the main color.   This one took place at Calamigos Equestrian Center in Burbank.   The ceremony was at the Little White House and the reception at The Polo Room, this is Kathy and Kevin’s wedding.

For starters, I have to say that we didn’t really met Kathy and Kevin until a couple of months after we had our initial floral consultation, that first meeting was a ”Virtual Consultation”.    She lives in The San Francisco area but her wedding was taking place here in Southern California.   Her wedding colors were Purple and Green but for her, she wanted white flowers with a touch of green and purple.   We went back and forth with some ideas but we didn’t really finalize everything until it was closer to the wedding.   One of the main concerns we had was the fact that her bridesmaids colors were not a pure shade of purple, but a blend of purple with a different tint.

For her Bouquet, she had a mixture of white Peonies, green Cymbidium Orchids and medium purple Mini Callas.  Her Bridesmaids carried a mixed bouquet of all green flowers with some purple Mocara Orchids as accents.   The Bridesmaids dresses were a dark Victorian Lilac so we had to limit the amount of purple that we could use against the dresses to minimize the mismatch.     Her photographer was Jac Shoot Photography, they captured the contrast and brightness of the green as we intended it to be.   To view some pictures of this wedding, visit the photographers blog.

Some shades of purple that you find in dresses now days, are very difficult to match with flowers, some colors are just not found in nature.    When using colors like a difficult shade of purple, the best thing to do is to use flowers from a very light lavender, all the way to a dark purple.   That wide gamma of colors will guarantee that the dresses will not look like if the belong in another wedding.    The amount of each color used will determine the look that the flowers will provide to your wedding.   The use of various shades of purple flowers can also be mixed with white, ivory and some shades of pink.   Another way of complimenting a difficult shade of purple dress is to use a contrasting color flower, such as green.   This second option will give in most cases a more modern and fresh look with a pop.

We were very excited to do her wedding, her color choices were magnificent and we couldn’t wait to see the end result.    Kathy, thank you for letting us be the ones to do your wedding and we wish you the best in your new married life.
